The new Spyrobot 4WD is the ultimate innovation in UGVs and was successfully tested in ElRob 2006, with outstanding results. It is an evolution of the Spybot MKII, with higher payload and terrain-handling capabilities. The unit has a better performance in off-road scenarios and cross-country mobility, making it useable as an exploration vehicle to be deployed from armoured or patrol vehicles, both in urban and extra-urban operations.
Its tossability and shock resistance grant survivability and operational effectiveness which gave the Spyrobot outstanding performances at the recent ElRob 2006 European Land Robot Trials held in the German Army base of Hammelburg in May 2006. The unit managed to climb the toughest ramps (over 45° in angle and with slippery surfaces) and crossed soft mud fields which were a major obstacle for several other competitors.
It is also capable of entering a small river and navigating it both upstream and downstream thanks to its fully sealed construction, floatability and Flapper Wheel design (patent pending), which resembles the paddles of a river boat but is fully flexible. This specific design acts as shock absorber, suspension and stabiliser and is capable of handling extreme obstacles.
At ElRob, visitors were also impressed by the ease of driving (no training necessary) and the low weight of the robot (under 6kg). The Spyrobot can be used for over 3hr at full speed in rough terrain without showing any loss of power. Its long range and outstanding performance in low-signal areas make it capable of operating up to 400m distance in non-urban scenarios and 150m in fully built-up urban environments. Besides, the unit survives tosses of up to 10m in distance and descends at full speed from staircases.
