RENK, RENK UAE and SESM at IDEX 2007 (Booth Number 2218)

16 January 2007

At the IDEX 2007 international military exhibition, which will be held in Abu Dhabi, the UAE, from the 18th to the 22nd of February 2007, the German gear manufacturer RENK is highlighting its comprehensive transmission programme for military tracked vehicles and gear units, stern tube bearings and thrust blocks for naval craft like frigates, corvettes, patrol boats, submarines, etc., as well as test systems for power transmission engineering.

The company is one of the leading manufacturers of power transmission engineering worldwide. For more than 40 years RENK and its French subsidiary SESM have been developing and producing specific transmission solutions for armed vehicles. The target is to use our experiences in offering our customers the optimum solution for their requirements. RENK is ready to develop and serve the customer with its products in the coming decades. Today, the companies can provide a variety of tank transmissions automatically performing all the tasks of high efficiency, low weight and low life-cycle-costs.

The product range of RENK comprises fully automatic hydrodynamic-mechanical powershift, reverse and steering transmissions with brake systems and final drives (18 types) for medium and heavy-weight tracked vehicles in a power range of 150 to 1,300 kW. All tracked vehicles of the German Army are equipped with these HSWL type transmissions.

RENK supplies more than 25 nations with transmissions for their armed forces. Prominent examples in the German Army equipped with our propulsion systems are the Marder, Leopard 2, Howitzer SP 2000, Fen-nek and AIFV Puma. For other nations, we delivered transmissions for Leopard 2s in Sweden and Spain, Arjun main battle tanks for India, M60 upgrade main battle tanks for Turkey and FMBT main battle tanks for South Korea, as well as Leclerc main battle tanks for France and the United Arab Emirates, to name only a few. Between 1993 and 2003 approximately 500 Leclerc tropicalisé tanks for the UAE were equipped with transmission systems from RENK, and have been successfully used.

Also at the exhibition our French subsidiary SESM will present a special tailored automatic transmission for T72 vehicles and derivates: the type ESM 350. Together with its highly effective cooling system it can be adjusted to a variety of high power engines. It fits into the T72 hull and pre-serves the original silhouette of the vehicle. The transmission is designed to transmit 850kW (1150hp) engine power. The customer is Poland, which will install the ESM 350 into their PT91 model for export to Malaysia. This program will be executed during 2006 and 2007.

Another example of latest developments is the HSWL 256-type transmission for the German AIFV Puma, which has been developed and built based on the enormous experience gained over the years. The development of the HSWL 256 was based on the necessity of the vehicle ability of being air loaded and, therefore demanded a strongly limited vehicle weight.

In this context not only the unit weight is of importance, but its design size and its integration into the hull. The examinations of all possible, already designed and new concepts showed that the lowest possible transmission weight can be achieved with the proven HSWL concept, but now for six speeds and with new mechanical and electronic components.

RENK has also presented a new type of transmissions for tracked military vehicles – the RENK Hybrid Electric Transmission – to the international market.

It is obvious that there will be always a future tracked vehicle generation which will need propulsion systems. They will be purely mechanical, hydraulic, electrical or electro-mechanical, or any combination thereof. RENK is prepared for this challenge. The company has in the past and will also in future engage itself in the international markets and shall stand for highest technology and reliable and quality products.

Since 2002, RENK has been present in the United Arab Emirates with a service unit and spare part outlet. This new company, called RENK UAE LLC, is headquartered in Abu Dhabi. The company has been founded in order to support the UAE land forces in the maintenance and servicing of the Euro powerpack. In addition to that and apart from known agencies in the region, the company is also the point of contact for the complete product range of RENK, and is available to carry out customer care and service functions. It is assisted in these tasks by the UAE company's shareholder, H.E. Abdulla Masaood, which contributes its specific knowledge and know-how to the business in this region.

RENK is also the international market leader of gear units for naval applications, specifically CODOG, CODAG and COGAG systems. In this field, RENK is a guarantee for safe manoeuvring at sea. Close on 450 propulsion systems on corvettes, frigates, coast guard vessels, mine-sweepers, etc. of approximately 30 international navies are currently equipped with RENK gear systems, for instance the F124 frigates of the German Navy, and also the corvettes of the Baynunah class for the UAE.
