Environics Oy will begin manufacturing and sales of vehicles for detection and analysis of radiological and nuclear threats. The concept is the first of its kind in the world-wide market.
The vehicles enable detection and identification of radiological threats faster than ever before. Environics has already sold the first line of vehicles and they will be delivered to the customer later this year.
The measuring instruments are situated within the vehicles, which are in constant real-time connection to the databases and to experts in control centres. This enables a rapid, reliable and accurate analysis within a very short timeframe. This attribute can be used, for example, to secure the safety of mass events or high-security meetings in major cities. The new technology also greatly reduces the possibility of false positive alarms.
Veli-Matti Lahti, vice president of sales at Environics Oy, said: "The vehicle enables fast detection of an irregular source of radiation within the environment of the vehicle. It may be from natural sources, a patient who has received isotope treatment, a missing radiation source or a criminal carrying radioactive material – possible dirty bomb material. The new system will detect and identify the threat rapidly."
The product development behind this new solution is made by the Finnish radiation and nuclear safety authority (STUK). Environics purchased the product rights from STUK in February and will handle the productisation, manufacturing and sales of the new innovations.
STUK, as an authoritive organisation, was looking for a companion from Finland to commercialise their inventions. The company was required to have experience in global sales and distribution of high-technology measurement devices, for which Environics is well-known.
Environics is especially known for its chemical detectors, which have been delivered to many countries worldwide. Environics also manufactures other versatile detectors and monitoring systems for the detection and identification of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats. These are more commonly known as CBRN threats.
The new products strenghten Environics' capability as a total solution provider for CBRN security.
