Convenient hardware encryption unit for secure GSM communication awarded FIPS 140-2 Level 2 certification.
Snapshield Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Tadiran Communications, today announced that its Snapcell product has received the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2, Level 2 validation from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Snapcell addresses the growing threat posed by the vulnerability of mobile communications through its convenient cellular encryption unit. This unit enables secure GSM-based communications across all four commonly used frequencies using a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) GSM handset. Unlike other existing secure communications solutions, which require purchase of a dedicated – and expensive – cellular handset, Snapcell is an accessory for the popular Sony-Ericsson brand of mobile phones. By simply attaching Snapcell to a standard GSM handset, a subscriber or field agent can enjoy discreet military-grade security, with minimal degradation in voice quality and no change in subscriber behavior.
FIPS 140-2, Security Requirements for Cryptographic Modules, is a US government standard that validates security claims for products using cryptography through the National Institute of Standards and Technology. FIPS 140-2 validation is trusted by enterprises, government agencies and emergency services as a measure of the safety of products used to convey sensitive information.
Commenting on the security certification, Uri Naor, VP Marketing and Sales said, “Snapshield’s will always ensure that its products conform to highest security standards, to give your customers complete peace of mind when communication their most sensitive information. By being awarded FIPS certification, Snapcell joins the Snaptrunk and Snapfone, allowing Snapshield to offer a comprehensive secure, managed, communication solution, covering all types of access networks.”
