Sectra Launches the First Truly Independent TETRA Crypto System

Wednesday, May 20, 2009 by Sectra Communications

The police, coastguard, customs and other public safety agencies communicate vital information using the TETRA network. Sectra will be the first to launch a crypto solution that protects voice communication between TETRA terminals from various suppliers against eavesdropping. The launch will take place at the TETRA World Congress from May 26 to May 29 in Munich.

TETRA is a digital radio technology and a common radio system used by organisations in society involved in public safety, security and health. The TETRA network is being built out in most European countries. The crypto solution now being launched by Sectra in the European market was developed in cooperation with Swedish authorities.

Michael Bertilsson, president of Sectra Communications, said: "The market for TETRA is growing, and such authorities as the police request encryption for the protection of information that is essential for society. Sectra's unique crypto promotes safe and efficient cooperation among various emergency services."

Sectra's crypto solution is embedded in a smart card that is easily inserted into TETRA terminals. The crypto protects conversations from eavesdropping independent of the terminal supplier. This means users can choose a terminal based on their own preferences and maintain shared security.
