Schonstedt GA-92XT Magnetic Locator Featured in Pentagon Briefing

05 December 2006

The Schonstedt GA-92XT magnetic locator featured in a recent Pentagon briefing by the US Army Rapid Equipping Force. The Army was highlighting its ability to send high-tech tools to soldiers in the field more quickly and affordably.

The Schonstedt magnetic locator was profiled as "an off-the-shelf magnetometer that troops are using to find weapons hidden in walls and under the ground."

According to the head of the Rapid Equipping Force and CNET News.com, which covered the briefing, the use of off-the-shelf technology means that even with modifications for military use, the gear can get to soldiers much faster than it would through the traditional acquisition process. The unit has about 20 people in Afghanistan and Iraq who work directly with soldiers and commanders to determine their requirements.

Schonstedt Instrument Company designs, manufactures and markets instruments and accessories used to locate underground objects. Its magnetic locators are used to find ferrous metal objects such as UXO, weapons, drums and storage tanks, and boundary markers. The company also manufactures a line of instruments to find and trace any linear, electrically-conductive material, such as telephone, cable television and fibre optic lines, water and gas pipes, and AC power lines.
