Commanders on operations will soon be able to make much better informed decisions relating to the safety of fuel carrying vehicles that are fitted with a wide range of urgent operational requirements (UORs), thanks to TRaC-TRL, experts in dangerous substances and explosive atmospheres (ATEX and DSEAR) EMC, environmental and safety. The improved level of risk assessment has been made possible following the introduction of TRaC-TRL to the general support vehicles' integrated project team (GSV IPT) at DVD last year.
"TRaC-TRL has helped us to overcome a long-standing challenge that we had been previously unable to resolve," comments Alison Henry, GSV IPT leader. "Since 2005 we have been trying to sort out the issue of integrating a range of complex UORs into fuel carrying vehicles deployed on operations. With extensive, complex and detailed European legislation affecting the transportation of dangerous goods, we had searched unsuccessfully for some time to find an appropriately qualified subject matter expert who could help us with this issue. However, a meeting at DVD enabled us to identify TRaC-TRL as a suitable partner in just one day."
Since DVD last year, GSV IPT and TRaC- TRL have conducted a series of tests on two types of fuel carrying vehicles. This work aims to better understand the risks associated with fitting a range of UORs in an environment where, due to the high ambient temperature, there is an increased likelihood of a vapour hazard. Recommendations based on the results will be passed on to frontline commanders as soon as they are finalised.
"We are delighted that DVD brought TRaC-TRL and GSV IPT together," comments Mark Heaven, MD of TRaC Global. "The issues surrounding the safe transportation of potentially explosive substances are extremely complex. However, my team's technical expertise, combined with the GSV's intimate knowledge of fuel carriers deployed on operations, has enabled us to provide scientifically proven information through inspection, calculation and test."
GSV IPT is a through-life IPT responsible for the procurement and in-service management of heavy logistics vehicles with a payload of 4t and above. Both TRaC-TRL and the members of GSV IPT responsible for the procurement and management of heavy logistics vehicles and TRaC-TRL will be at DVD.
