Conventional gun lubricants typically contain perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), two potential highly carcinogenic substances which cannot be broken down by heat, light, or microbes. It is common practice for lubricant manufacturers to make use of these substances as they are known to impart lubricating properties into the finished product; however the dangerous fact that they can also cause cancer is not regarded sufficiently and is widely neglected.
Studies reported by the United States’ Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have shown that rats fed PFOA were more likely to develop tumors in the pancreas, liver, testicles, and mammary glands. PFOS has also been linked to liver and thyroid cancer in rats.
