IDEX 2005: RDE Offers High-Performance Optronic Systems

14 February 2005 09:44

Optronic systems for surveillance and security tasks constitute a very important part of military operations. To a significant degree, optical technology supplements the results obtained by other modes of reconnaissance.

Thanks to the passive operating principle of optronic technologies, it is now easier than ever before to monitor and secure large areas without revealing one's position. In particular, networkability and the capability of linking with command systems enable an enormous increase in efficiency within a given network.

Among the most important tasks of RDE's sensor development departments are the development and manufacture of sensor assemblies that are later integrated to form a complete system. As a small part of the product portfolio, Rheinmetall Defence Electronics GmbH is proud to present its BAA reconnaissance system to the members of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

The BAA is a non-stabilized sensor package mounted on an extendible mast arrangement. It consists of a thermal imaging sight, TV camera and laser rangefinder. The field of view of the thermal imager and the CCD camera can be adjusted to identical settings using the increments of the daylight zoom.

The control and display unit incorporates the monitor, a control panel, a joystick for controlling sensor movements as well as the various sensors and a complete electronic processing system.

In recent years the BAA has become one of the best-selling products of the Land Systems unit of Rheinmetall Defences Electronics. Following the order from the Swiss procurement agency Gruppe Rüstung for 120 BAA systems for Switzerland's Forward Observer Vehicle in 2000, another order was secured: at the end of 2001 the Netherlands, as the lead nation in the Dutch/German project Fennek (light armoured vehicle), ordered 351 systems together with Germany. Moreover, another NATO nation uses the BAA in border control operations, deploying 150 stand-alone units. Other countries have also shown strong interest in this product.

Moreover, there is a very large global market for retrofitting airborne or land-based identification systems with high-performance optronic technologies that are both network-capable and tailored to future needs. RDE's technological expertise guarantees excellent quality when it comes to retrofits and programmes to upgrade combat efficiency.
