Official Roll Out of the Bundeswehr's New Air Defence System
27 June 2001 11:27
Recently Germany's Bundeswehr has taken delivery of the world's most advanced air defence system. Attuned to the altered mission profile of the German armed forces, it covers the urgent requirement of the German Army's air defence arm for an up-to-date, air-transportable, fully automatic antiaircraft missile system.
On June 27th 2001, the Bundeswehr has taken delivery of the first platoon of its new "LeFlaSys" air defence system at the official roll out at the Feldwebel Schmid barracks in Rendsburg, home of the German Army Air Defence School. The lead contractor, STN ATLAS is manufacturing the system in co-operation With Krauss-Maffei Wegmann in Munich. As the supplier of the Wiesel 2 platform vehicle, Rheinmetall Landsysteme of Kiel, is also materially involved in the project.
The Bundeswehr's new air defence system is a pioneering development not only in terms of technology, but also in the way it originated: STN ATLAS began developing the system in 1992 at its own initiative, without a development contract or government financial support.
Developed in response to new strategic concepts, the "LeFlaSys" (Leichtes Flugabwehrsystem = Light Air Defence System) was designed specifically for NATO rapid reaction forces, especially for protecting air-transportable units, their facilities and mission-essential systems. Delivery of the systems will be completed in 2003. Other NATO countries are planning to procure similar air defence systems, or have already decided to do so.
