Saft has been awarded two contracts by the UK Ministry of Defence to supply lithium-sulphur dioxide (Li-SO2) batteries: BA-5590 B/U and G30-102B. Both contracts will support the military's current operational requirements for portable radios used in the field. Delivery for both contracts, worth £2.75 million (approximately €3.4 million) began in June 2008.
"Due to urgent requirements from the field, rapid delivery of the batteries was one of the most important factors in winning these contracts," said Thomas Alcide, general manager of Saft's specialty battery group. "Multiple orders from the UK Ministry of Defence re-affirm Saft's position as the leading supplier of advanced battery power for military applications worldwide."
Saft's South Shields facility is fulfilling the G30-102B series order and provides portable power in Li-SO2 and Li-SOCl2 technologies. The BA-5590 batteries are manufactured in Saft's facility in Valdese, NC, which supplies multiple lithium battery technologies, including Li-SO2, Li-MnO2 and Li-ion.
With more than 30 years of extensive experience in lithium batteries, Saft continues to offer its military customers the best value power solutions for the soldier in the field.
