ADLER II Artillery Computer Network Delivered to Troops

The Artillery Brigade 100 accepts the first ten cabins with the system developed by ESG.
After about five years of development, the ADLER II Artillery Computer Network has now been officially handed over to the Bundeswehr (German Federal Army). This took place on 30th May 2006 at the "Wehrtechnische Dienstelle 81" in Greding. The German forces are now in possession of a state-of-the-art, effective system that connects all the existing IT systems of the artillery to their weapon and reconnaissance systems and thus makes a great contribution to network enabled capabilities.
The German Artillery command, control and weapon deployment system, ADLER II, was developed by ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH by order of the Federal Office of the Bundeswehr for Information Management and Information Technology. It replaces the existing ADLER system which has been in operation since 1995. Computers connected to each other in a network with the relevant software and communication systems bring together the areas of reconnaissance, command and effects. The system also has an interface that can be used for operations involving the cooperation of the French, British, Italian and American artillery systems.
The functional design of ADLER II is based on its predecessor but includes new developments in many parts. The new system now runs on a Windows platform and a fully graphical user interface improves its user-friendliness. Also new is an integrated map and situation module. The ADLER II system has an open structure based on standard components that enables it to adapt to future modifications such as integration into a comprehensive command, control and information system for the forces.
ESG developed the entire software and the installation sets for the cabins, was responsible for the hardware and software integration, for system checks, technical inspection and approval, and conducted the training of ADLER training staff. The hardware was installed into the command posts by specialists from the "Wehrtechnische Dienststelle 81" in cooperation with ESG.
The user of the first ten ADLER II cabins is the Artillery Brigade 100. ESG will continue to be responsible for the technical and logistic supervision of the system as well as for software maintenance and modification .
