SIE Computing Solutions Strengthens Electronic Packaging Industry Leadership in 2009

12 January 2010

SIE Computing Solutions, Inc., a provider of rugged electronic packaging solutions for mission-critical embedded computing platforms deployed in harsh environments, has announced major milestones that marked the company's continued growth in 2009.

In April 2009 SIE, formerly Carlo Gavazzi Computing Solutions, was acquired by privately-held embedded computing company S.I.E. AG. The integration into S.I.E. AG allows the company to offer the industry's broadest array of embedded solutions for a wide range of applications and to further expands its worldwide opportunities for growth.

SIE Computing Solutions has almost 40 year of experience in bringing computing solutions to complex, highly demanding environments such as extreme temperatures, humidity, dust, sand, vibration or weight. SIE technology has been used in high-profile military programs such as JLTV, Patriot Missile programme, Sea Sparrow missile programme and the DDG-51 upgrade programme.

SIE also continues to win contracts for large industrial oil and gas exploration, medical, and emerging technology applications. Examples include the supply of technology solutions for wire line logging machines used to control the tools and log data to optimise oil, gas, and natural gas field production and providing embedded computing solutions for the systems used to run high-performance MRI machines.

"We are fortunate that the trend of outsourcing by world-class organisations in order to help reduce costs and mitigate risks matches SIE's core competencies, which enabled us to experience a strong year of financial performance and new product development," says Chris Boutilier, president of SIE Computing Solutions. "In 2010, we look forward to continuing to supply high-performance embedded computing solutions used by the world's most advanced and demanding customers in mission-critical deployments."

New products for rugged environments

SIE continued new product development of its rugged line in 2009 with enhanced versions of the ATR 700 series, including unique frame designs for maximum heat dissipation in the 716 Conduction Cooled and 717 Air-Over Conduction Cooled ATRs, and the introduction of the new 720 Series Liquid Cooled ATR. The latest addition to the series, the 720 meets the cooling requirements of today's high thermal load systems that cannot be satisfied by convection and conduction cooling alone, such as those based on VPX technology. It is designed to use a variety of fluids for thermal cooling and features conducting walls that allow for front or rear fluid access.

Expanding this commitment to VPX, SIE also introduced the 5-slot I/O PLUS 3U VPX full mesh backplane, designed for a wide array of applications and capable of delivering over 200 watts of power per VPX slot to provide high-bandwidth in a compact size. I/O PLUS provides greater I/O flexibility through an innovative use of interchangeable I/O daughter cards to reduce the need for custom backplanes for each application, which makes it ideal for deployment in aerospace and vetronic military applications in the small 3U form factor. The product was named an Editor's Choice Product Award winner by VME and Critical Systems in its December 2009 Special OpenVPX supplement issue.

Continued international expansion

The year 2009 also brought international growth and expansion for SIE Computing Solutions. In April, the company signed an agreement with ACAL Microsystems of Berkshire, England, to act as the company's exclusive UK sales partner. A division of ACAL Technology, ACAL Microsystems has over 20 years of experience supplying embedded and bus-based computer products to UK OEMs and system integrators in the avionics, broadcast, communications, defence, industrial, medical, and transport industries. ACAL Microsystems specialises in solutions based on standard architectures/busses, including VME, VPX, PCI, cPCI, xTCA, PC104 and others.

To further the company's growth in the UK, SIE hired industry veteran Ian Day to assist in business development pursuits as well as to act as a consultant to SIE Computing Solutions' world-class engineering teams on standard ATR, VPX and new technology products. Day brings over 30 years of technology experience in designing enclosures for severe environments, having served as the head of R&D for Elma UK, the European Centre for Severe System Products. He also worked on the British Military VME programme where he designed, developed, and qualified all severe environment enclosures, including Mil Spec power supplies, backplanes, and air-cooled and conduction-cooled enclosures for the military and industrial markets.
