Customers are seeking extreme protection and safety performance for their end-products. Ruukki's Ramor™ armour steel is extremely strong, hardened steel for vehicle protection applications. Ruukki also supplies fully-fitted cabins and protective structures for off-road trucks.
Ramor™ plate has excellent ballistic properties in combination with high hardness and strength. Ramor is developed for applications, where blast protection or high ballistic resistance is required, such as armoured vehicles, doors, window frames and systems for transporting and safekeeping money. Shooting range equipment is another application for which the product has been developed in cooperation with the customer.
Ramor armour steel is extremely strong, hardened steel. By using an optimised direct quenching technique and alloying, sufficient toughness and hardness can be achieved without subjecting the armour steel to a tempering treatment.
The numerical value after the name represents nominal Brinell hardness. Ramor 500 is Ruukki's best-selling armour steel, designed for both ballistic, or bulletproof, protection and protection against the pressure effect of an explosion. For example, three to four times the thickness of Ramor 500 armour steel is needed when using traditional commercial steel or structural steel. When testing, Ruukki uses the German PM2000/2007 and Stanag 4569 norms.
"When we test the products, we are looking for the minimum thickness that will provide protection against a threat. To protect a person from the bullet of a handgun, we need a 3mm Ramor 500 steel plate. Stopping a bullet from a Kalashnikov assault rifle requires a thickness of 4.25mm. However, to stop an armour-piercing bullet, a 12mm thickness is required," explains Heikki Kinnunen, application manager from Ruukki.
Ruukki has ranked among Sisu Auto's key partners for decades, with collaboration in subcontracting and design on both the military equipment and civilian fronts. Sisu Auto is a long-established Finnish truck maker, which not only makes heavy transport trucks, but also has a strong focus on the product development of off-road trucks.
There is a long tradition of working together in the manufacture of off-road military trucks, where the subcontracting range was expanded from chassis components firstly to cabin structures and frames, and later to fully-fitted cabins. Ruukki's Ramor armour steel, which passed the Finnish defence forces' extremely tough test criteria for its new vehicles, is the latest addition to be used in trucks.
The cabins for off-road trucks supplied by Ruukki are fully fitted and ready for installation. Ruukki supplies customised cabins for trucks, special vehicles and various mobile machines, including forest harvesters and mining vehicles. Product development and design are also part of the service and further intensify customer collaboration.
