New Position to Coordinate R&D in U.S., Germany; Expand Market Opportunities

Ceradyne, Inc. (Company) (Nasdaq: CRDN) appointed Dr. Thomas Juengling to the newly created position of Chief Technology Officer. Included in the duties of this position will be the coordination of the research and development efforts in North America and at Ceradyne ESK Ceramics’ R&D laboratories in Germany. Although Dr. Juengling will coordinate all Ceradyne R&D efforts, the direct reporting organization in Germany will remain unchanged.

Juengling spent eight years at ESK Ceramics in a number of technical management positions and holds a Ph.D. in engineering and materials science from the University of Karlsruhe. Juengling has relocated from Germany to accept this new position at Ceradyne’s corporate headquarters in Costa Mesa, California.

Joel P. Moskowitz, Ceradyne chief executive officer, commented: “I am extremely pleased that Thomas has accepted the position of Chief Technology Officer. He is an accomplished technology manager and is respected on both sides of the Atlantic. Ceradyne’s R&D will be market and product focused with the goal of introducing new and/or improved advanced technical ceramic products in order to allow the Company to meet its strategic objectives of balanced growth in commercial and defense markets on an international scale.”

Mr. Moskowitz further commented: “I am very proud of the Company’s long time R&D efforts here in the U.S. as well as in Germany where the portfolio of patents and depth of ESK’s R&D has become increasingly evident since Ceradyne’s acquisition of ESK Ceramics in August 2004. Of particular interest and focus will be the areas of non-reacting ceramics for use in the severe environment of molten aluminum and the ability to join ceramic-to-ceramic resulting in extremely complicated structures for use as heat exchangers in chemical micro reactors and in hydraulic surge valves.”

Ceradyne develops, manufactures, and markets advanced technical ceramic products and components for defense, industrial, automotive/diesel, and commercial applications.
