SCDB-Technology – Propulsion System for tank ammunition
11 February 2005 11:53
Modern high-performance propellants for tank ammunition consist of a combustible case and multi-base propellants. The maximum exploitation of the interior-ballistic reserves is only possible if we achieve the objective of a temperature-independent burning characteristic.
SCDB (Surface Coated Double Base) technology offers this possibility. It is a technology platform already proven successfully in various applications. New processes and the firmly anchored surface treatment are the keys to this technological leap. From a strategic point-of-view the significance of this module is particularly high since the competition has nothing comparable to offer.
Nitrochemie's technology is product-specific and tailor-made to suit the customers' needs. Within the spectrum of 90 to 125 mm calibres, Nitrochemie delivers enhanced performance of 5 to 10%.
This results in the following advantages for the ammunition:
- Higher penetration capability
- Longer range
- Improved hit probability
- Unchanged ballistics over the entire temperature range
On the basis of new energetic plasticizers Nitrochemie is already building the future, with the goal of being able to offer performance maximization under system-compatible conditions. Therefore, the company primarily uses energetic materials displaying more favourable thermodynamic properties, which enable the production of insensitive, high-performance and low-erosion propellants.
A further part of this is the optimization of the combustible cartridge cases. The objective here is to achieve a maximization of charge mass by using thin-walled cases with sufficient or improved mechanical strength.
