Swiss Army Procures 36 MOWAG PIRANHA RAP Armoured Vehicles
Within the context of the Armaments Program 2002, the Swiss Parliament approved the procurement of 36 state-of-the-art „Radio Access Point Armoured Vehicles“ (RAP Pz), based on the worldwide successful MOWAG PIRANHA III 8x8. Mid December 2002 the Gruppe Rüstung (Defence Procurement Agency) signed the respective order with MOWAG. For the technology company in Kreuzlingen, this order represents further confirmation for the performance and reliability of the armoured vehicle PIRANHA. For many years now, the Swiss Army has placed its faith in the proven MOWAG products, with the „Panzerjäger” (Tank Hunter) TOW PIRANHA, the „Radschützenpanzer (APC) 93” and the Artillery Forward Observation Vehicle EAGLE. The RAP Pz vehicle is a mobile protected platform, designed to provide secure communication between the radio supported and wire connected networks. The 36 vehicles will be manufactured at the Kreuzlingen site and delivered to the Gruppe Rüstung (DPA) as from mid 2004 in lots of three vehicles per month.
MOWAG PIRANHA RAP Pz
The RAP Pz is a highly-mobile military „Cellularphone-Antenne“ and forms the bridge between the tactical radio network and the military telephone network. With the aid of the Radio System SE-235 calls can be connected via the RAP Pz into the integrated military telephone communications system. This setup succeeds in facilitating and significantly improving military communications and command over large distances, especially in the case of mechanised units. The RAP Pz comprises two main systems, namely the basic PIRANHA IIIC 8x8 vehicle and the radio integration system CNRI (Combat Net Radio Interface). In addition, the vehicle is provided with a weapon station (12.7 mm MG 64) for self-defense as well as an APU (30 kVA, 400 / 230 V) for supplying the CNRI and the air conditioning system with electric power.
