The Spanish Marine Infantry Orders Mowag Piranha III 8x8 Amphibious Armoured Vehicles

21 December 2001

MOWAG concluded a contract with the Spanish Ministry of Defence on Dec. 5, 2001 for the supply of 18 armoured amphibious PIRANHA III 8x8 vehicles. The PIRANHA vehicle will become the core of the mechanised units of the Spanish Marine Infantry over the next years.

Based on the well-know amphibious capabilities of the PIRANHA vehicle, MOWAG succeeded in selling the first 18 armoured amphibious vehicles to the Spanish Marine Infantry.
This success marks the first break through of MOWAG into the Spanish market and MOWAG is proud of having won another NATO member state which will introduce the proven PIRANHA III vehicle.
The vehicles will be delivered towards the end of 2003/beginning of 2004 in three different configurations, i.e. APC, Command-Post and Ambulance. They are equipped with full night vision and night fighting capability, NBC-protection, navigation and self-defence aids.

After orders placed by Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland, the U.S. Army and a as yet unnamed country outside Europe, Spain is the latest PIRANHA III vehicle customer. Up till now a total of more than 1'300 PIRANHA III vehicles have been delivered or firmly ordered.
