Less-Lethal Weapons (LLW), also called non-lethal weapons, are typically used in UN peace missions, civil wars, demonstrations or police interventions with innocent bystanders (hostage-taking etc.).
LLW are required in all cases where the involved persons or bystanders must not suffer injuries or permanent damage. RUAG has been developing and producing the ammunition for deployments of this nature for several years. Today we can offer to our costumer a wide range of different products. We distinguish two product families of Less-Lethal Solutions. On the one hand we have Less-Lethal ammunition for 40mm LV grenade launchers and on the other hand we have throwing bodies.
The following types of ammunition are available for the widely used 40mm grenade launchers:
Tear gas over a long distance: LLW 40mm x 46mm Comet
In violent incidents it is possible to spread the irritant (CS) affecting the mucous membranes over the rioting crowd by high-angle fire (depending on the type, with deployment distances of 75, 100 or 150 m). Delay times can be specified by the client. Our PE case is suitable for recycling.
Tear gas over a short distance: LLW 40mm x 46mm Scatter
This irritant ammunition is called for interventions or for close-range defence purposes. Three different active ingredients in powder form are available: CS, PAVA and OC.
Rubber balls from 10 m: LLW 40mm x 46mm Rubber
This rubber ball product is used to stop violence for riot control or in various interventions. Deployment range from 10 metres. The PE case is suitable for recycling.
Tear gas into closed rooms: LLW 40mm x 46mm Cracker
Interventions in hostage dramas and raids sometimes require special means. The LLW Cracker permits to bring the active agent CS into a closed room without completely penetrating the obstacle. The launched penetrator stays stuck and transports the irritant into the room concerned, whereby it does not matter whether the obstacle is e.g. a heavy entrance door or the thin wall of a caravan.
K.E. projectile with an irritant substance: LLW 40mm x 46mm Puncter
To intervene often means the well-aimed stopping of an aggressor. For this purpose we have developed the Puncter, whose underlying innovative concept combines the effect of a K.E. projectile with that of an irritant substance. This product is soon available.
The following products make up our range of throwing bodies:
'Flash' and 'Bang' grenade: LLW Flash Bang
In appropriate interventions this heavy thrown body of a modular structure creates a surprise effect with «flash» and «bang». Depending on requirements, irritant can be added to the cargo module on site. Ignition is either by pyrotechnical means or electronically by remote control. A practice variant is available.
Smoke and tear gas: LLW Mouse
In the unfriendly riot-control service this smoke cartridge is thrown manually and generates a large and dense cloud of irritant during approx. 10 seconds.
