Rheinmetall Denel Munition - Ammunition, Missile Sub-Systems

Rheinmetall Denel Munition (Pty) Ltd (RDM) is a South African based company owned by Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH (majority shareholding) and Denel (Pty) Ltd. RDM is an integrated producer of ammunition and associated chemical products. Its product range includes:

1. Medium to large calibre ammunition, such as 40mm rounds, 60mm, 81mm and 120mm mortar, 76/62mm naval, 76mm and 105mm armour, and 105mmm and 155mm extended range artillery ammunition and 155mm modular charges. Both high explosive and pyrotechnical carriers are manufactured
2. Sub-systems for rockets and missiles, such as propulsion systems, warheads and safety and arming devices
3. Aircraft bombs
4. Energetic raw materials such as nitrocellulose, ballpowders, propellants, etc
5. Turnkey ordnance plant and equipment

Large calibre ammunition

RDM offers the full range of 155mm ammunition designed for optimum delivery of firepower up to 40km to JBMoU requirements and type classified in accordance with STANAG guidelines. Ballistic similitude within the projectile family (including HE, Prac, Smoke and Illuminating) ensures ease of application for end-user. The base bleed motor unit can be fitted to the projectiles to achieve up to 30% enhancement of range with existing charge systems. Combustible case modular charge system is designed for use in 39, 45 and 52 calibre 155mm barrels.

The Igala 105mm High Explosives artillery projectile was type qualified in the USA under the US Army’s advanced artillery (ACAAP) programme.

Medium calibre ammunition

RDM offers mortar ammunition in 60mm, 81mm and 120mm calibres for use in standard NATO weapons. High explosives, smoke and illumination fillings are available. Newly designed Long Range bombs provide enhanced range with standard weapons.

RDM supplies a variety of both Low Velocity and High Velocity 40mm grenades. The Low Velocity range includes high explosive, high explosive dual purpose, practice, practice tracer, target marker, red phosphorous, riot control baton, CS irritant and coloured smoke grenades. The High Velocity range includes high explosive, high explosive dual purpose, practice, practice tracer and practice flash bang grenades.

The range of navy ammunition consists of the 76mm / 62 mm caliber rounds with configurations for use against sea-skimming missiles, aircraft, ships as well as for coastal bombardment.

Armour rounds with 76mm and 105mm calibres are also manufactured.

Rocket and missile sub-systems

RDM forms a critical part of the A-Darter air-to-air missile programme for the South African and Brazilian air forces in that it is responsible for the development of a state-of-the-art rocket motor, warhead and safety-and-arming device.

Minefield Breaching Systems

The Plofadder minefield breaching systems, consisting of man-portable and vehicle-mounted systems, enable a rapidly moving force to clear a safe passage through anti-tank and anti-personnel minefields in seconds.

Aircraft bombs

RDM manufactures aircraft bomb in 120kg, 250kg, 440kg and 880 kg calibres that is designed for use with most types of high-performance combat aircraft and is effective against personnel, thin-skinned vehicles and thin skin armour personnel carriers.
